This Training Class will teach how to feed, clean, and care for the bird species we have in our care. We will also go over general site cleaning, and how to use VolunteerMatters. We will be going over a lot of information, so it is recommended that you bring a notepad so that you can take notes. Please wear pants and closed toed shoes.

Properly feed and care for altricial (songbirds) and precocial (waterfowl and game birds) birds at the Baldwin Wildlife Center. General cleaning, dishes and laundry as needed. Until we start getting baby birds into the Wildlife Center, this Volunteer Opportunity will be feeding adult birds and extra cleaning projects. ***If you sign up for an 8am shift, you will be meeting staff at the back door PRECISELY at 8am. If you are not signed up by 6am sharp the day of the shift, staff will NOT know you are coming and will NOT check the back door. You would then need to wait at the back door until someone sees you and opens it for you, which is not guaranteed, or wait until our front lobby doors open.***

We will go over this position's main focus, which is to ensure all needed diets are prepped and ready for use. This includes making formula for our young animals, chopping fruits and vegetables, hard boiling eggs, sifting/feeding our mealworms, restocking our dry food storage bins, restocking and organizing the Diet Prep Room cabinets, and ensuring the Diet Prep Room is stocked with knives and cutting boards. We will also be covering Cleaning protocols, including laundry, dishes, cage wash, and the cleaning chemicals we use. Please wear pants and closed toed/closed heeled shoes.

This position focuses on the various aspects of cleaning that is needed around our center on a daily basis. This includes laundry, washing dishes, washing crates/enclosures, sweeping and mopping floors, and sanitizing door handles/doors/frequently touched hardware and surfaces. ***If you sign up for an 8am shift, you will be meeting staff at the back door PRECISELY at 8am. If you are not signed up by 6am sharp the day of the shift, staff will NOT know you are coming and will NOT check the back door. You would then need to wait at the back door until someone sees you and opens it for you, which is not guaranteed, or wait until our front lobby doors open.*** You do not have to preform all the above tasks. For example, if you would like to come in and only do laundry, that is completely fine. This position is scheduled in shorter 2 hour shifts. If you would like to do a regularly scheduled longer shift or a shift with different start/end times than listed, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator.

Transport wildlife from the Nebraska Humane Society in Omaha to the Baldwin Wildlife Center or other appropriate caregiver(s). Must have valid driver's license and car insurance.

The NHS Transport Team ensures that all wildlife picked up by or dropped off at the Nebraska Humane Society is delivered to receive prompt, professional, and critical care at NWR. There are typically two shifts per day: 10am-10:30am pickup from NHS during Baby Season 11am-11:30am pickup from NHS during Non-Baby Season 4:15pm-6pm pickup from NHS Monday though Friday 4:15pm-5pm pickup from NHS Saturday & Sunday Both weekly and on-call positions are available. *NWR is currently unable to reimburse fuel or mileage.

Nebraska Wildlife Rehab takes in animals from around the ENTIRE state of Nebraska. When we get a call about an animal that needs to be brought in to us, we look to our list of Statewide Transporters to get the animal(s) to us. *You do not need to be willing to drive all the way across the state, any number of miles towards our Wildlife Center in Omaha is helpful. *NWR is not able to reimburse fuel/mileage.

These Orientations are in-person, on-site training classes at our Baldwin Wildlife Center, located at 9777 M st. Omaha, NE 68127 Completing one of our Volunteer Orientations is the first step in becoming a Nebraska Wildlife Rehab volunteer. Volunteers are required to go through these initial orientations before they are allowed to sign up for any other training classes, such as our Mammal Nursery Training Class, or Humane Society Transporter Training Class. The orientation will start with a PowerPoint going over how to use VolunteerMatters, who we are, what types of volunteer roles we have available, and the basics of being a Volunteer with us. Then we will transition in to a Cleaning Training, followed by a Diet Preparation Training. The Covid Vaccination with a vaccine/booster that has been received within the last 12 months is required to be able to stay for the Cleaning and Diet Prep Trainings. If you do not have your proof of covid vaccination w/ recent booster, you are welcome to still attend the beginning PowerPoint part of the Volunteer Orientation. However you will not be allowed to any Nursery, Diet/Cleaning or Transport training classes until you have submitted the Covid proof.
